National Defence Academy (NDA)

Conducted twice a year, usually in April and September.
Nationality
A candidate applying for NDA should be unmarried, as well as:
  • An Indian national, or
  • A Nepali subject, or
  • A person of Indian descent from Burma, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the East African nations of Zambia, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Zaire, and Ethiopia, or Vietnam who are permanently settled here.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Age: 16.5 to 19.5 years.
  • Education:
    o For Army: 10+2 or equivalent.
    o For Air Force and Navy: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics.
  • Candidates who are appearing in Class 12 or equivalent examination can apply as per NDA exam eligibility
  • Gender:Male & Female
  • Candidates should not marry until they complete their training.
NDA Height & Weight for Army and Air Force
NDA height prescribed is 157 cms (For Air Force it is 162.5 cms). Certain exceptions are applicable for candidates based on the region from where they belong. NDA height for girls is 157 cms.
NDA Medical Requirements for Visual Standards
  • The distance vision (corrected) of candidates should be 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye
  • Myopia should not be more than –2.5 D
  • Hyper metropia not more than 3.5 D including astigmatism
  • Air Force candidates must not wear spectacles
Exam Pattern
  • Stages: Written exam (Mathematics and General Ability) followed by an Interview (SSB).
Subjects:
  • Mathematics: Objective type with 120 questions in 2½ hours.
  • • General Ability Test (GAT) : Objective type with 150 questions in 2½ hours
    o Total Marks: 900 (Mathematics - 300; GAT - 600).
  • Mathematics
    o Each correct answer carries 2.5 marks, while each incorrect answer carries 0.83 negative marks.
  • GAT (General Ability Test)
    o Each correct answer carries 4 marks, while each incorrect answer carries 1.33 negative marks.

NDA Syllabus for Trigonometry Angles and their measures in degrees and in radians. Trigonometrical ratios. Trigonometric identities Sum and difference formulae. Multiple and Sub-multiple angles. Inverse trigonometric functions. Applications-Height and distance, properties of triangles.
NDA Syllabus for Analytical Geometry of Two and Three Dimension Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate system. Distance formula. Equation of a line in various forms. The angle between two lines. Distance of a point from a line. Equation of a circle in standard and in general form. Standard forms of parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Eccentricity and axis of a conic. Point in a three-dimensional space, the distance between two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. Equation two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. NDA Syllabus for Differential Calculus Concept of a real-valued function–domain, range, and graph of a function. Composite functions, one-to-one, onto, and inverse functions. The notion of limit, Standard limits—examples. Continuity of functions—examples, algebraic operations on continuous functions. Derivative of function at a point, geometrical and physical interpretation of a derivative—applications. Derivatives of sum, product, and quotient of functions, derivative of a function with respect to another function, derivative of a composite function. Second-order derivatives. NDA Syllabus for Integral Calculus and Differential Equations Integration as inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions. Evaluation of definite integrals—determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves—applications.
Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples. Classification of data, Frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution—examples. Graphical representation—Histogram, Pie Chart, frequency polygon— examples. Measures of Central tendency—Mean, median and mode. Variance and standard deviation—determination and comparison. Correlation and regression.
Probability
Random experiment, outcomes and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Union and Intersection of events. Complementary, elementary and composite events. Definition of probability—classical and statistical—examples. Elementary theorems on probability—simple problems. Exam Dates:
  • The NDA exam is usually conducted twice a year, in April and September.
Medical Examination:
  • Candidates who qualify the SSB interview will undergo a medical examination at a military hospital. For further guidance you can visit official Indian Army website.

Final Selection:
  • The final selection for the NDA is based on the combined score of the written exam and SSB interview.
  • Candidates who are selected will join the Indian Naval Academy (Ezhimala) or the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun).
